My name is James and I'm the chief editor of Five Magics(M5), which means that everything in the M5 system I have either written personally or touched in some other way. You can find me on the Discord most days and I'll usually drop everything to talk about M5. Five Magics has been my hobby and passion project for nearly two decades. It started during a homebrew campaign of D&D 3.5 edition with most of the people currently considered editors in the M5 project. After reviewing my ever growing list of houserules, I realized I had the basis for a new system.
The next epiphany had to do with the way magic is handled in most game systems. In most systems, whether your powers are divine, arcane, or other, they basically work the same way, such as spell slots per day. Even the spell lists are frequently similar with the possibility of a cleric summoning a flaming column and fulfilling a nearly identical role to the wizard throwing a fireball. M5 seeks to change this by offering several distinct magical systems that not only do different things, but function in different ways.
The other major goal of M5 is to decrease the restricted options of combat characters. M5 warriors not only have more options in combat, but they are able to build themselves into skillful characters with abilities outside of combat, as well.
These basic goals were achieved many years ago, but we continue to iterate and improve upon the basic rules seeking to strike a balance between complexity and character options that will make the game fun for veterans and new comers alike. So drop into the Discord and ask your questions. We'll be happy to answer them.
